Chinchilla are adorable animals. They do not require much to be happy but still live a quite long life with average of 10 years old. However, there are also some things are important for them to remain happy and healthy.
One of the most important requirements of them is the best chinchilla cage; it is their home where they spend most of their lifetime. Many new owners do not know exactly how big the chinchilla cage should be. As chinchilla parents, it is your responsibility provide them the proper cage sizing to remain happy and healthy.
#1 The cage should large enough for a couple of chinchilla
Take note that you chinchillas are social creatures. In the natural, they usually live in a group. Thus, they also should be kept at least two in the enclosure. Besides, chinchilla require much of love and attention, if you do not have much time interact with him, of if he has no friend, he will suffer from a lethargic behaviour.
As the result, you should get the large cage, what has enough room for a pair. Even you a keeping a single chinchilla now, you will not know if one day you will want to have the more one for the double cuteness.
#2 Minimum size requirements of chinchillas cage
Housing for one chinchilla needs to be a minimum of 3 ft x 2 ft x 2ft, or 12 cubic feet. But if you are keeping two or want to keep more than one, they will need a larger cage. Having at least 4 square feet of floor space is important to live comfortably.
Not only wide and long, the cage also needs to be tall. This is because chinchillas like to jump and climb, they require sufficient space to exercise and rest. In the wide, chinchillas can jump upwards of six feet. So provide them a large cage with multiple levels if possible.
#3 Larger is always better
The above is minimum size requirements, however keep your mind that the larger the cage, the better. As mention below chinchillas love to jump and climb. They are high energy animals.
The ideal cage for chinchilla should includes multi-levels, platforms and ramps. This will allow your pet do what they like and daily do fun exercise, which will prevent obesity and other health problems. Not only that, the cage also should have hammocks, wheel, toys and a shelter area. Therefor, you will need a larger cage than you think to accommodate and storage all these things.
